CHRISTMAS – Gloria in Excelsis Deo!

December 18, 2008

Most of the civilized world finds Christmas a time of great joy and celebration.  What is the real source of this seasonal joy that has covered our earth for over two millenniums?

It is “glory”.  “God’s glory,” expressed in the Latin phrase, Gloria in Excelsis Deo!

God revealed his glory in many ways, but on no occasion more wonderfully than on that first Christmas morning.  Remember?  “Angels from the realm of glory” who brought to those shepherds the joyful tidings.  The same glory that had come down on Mount Sinai requiring Moses’ face to be veiled, (covered from the radiating light! radiation?) and that had filled the temple at its dedication by King Solomon, had now entered a humble stable in the little town of Bethlehem.  Some of heaven’s glory could actually be seen in the face of the baby Jesus.

Paul expressed it this way a few years later:  “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”  That’s why Jesus was to be called Emmanu-El – “God with us.”

The source of Yuletide joy?  The glory in the presence of the Babe of Bethlehem that is the everlasting source of what we know as Christmas from that first happy morning right down to Christmas 2008.
Martin Luther was thinking these very thoughts four centuries ago: “Ah, what wretched people we are!  To think, that we are so cold and slothful in our attitude toward this great joy, which after all happened for us, this great benefaction, which is far, far superior to all other works of creation.  And yet how hard it is for us to believe, though the Good News was preached and sung for us by angels who are heavenly theologians, and have rejoiced in our behalf!  Their song is most glorious.  It contains that whole Christian faith, for the Gloria in Excelsis is supreme worship.  They wish us such worship, and they bring it to us in Christ.”

That is the real Christmas spirit – the genuine article.  Jesus said “Not as the world giveth, give I unto you.”  Before your Christmas cards and gifts, let your priority be thanks to God for His unspeakable gift.  Merry Christmas!
