Should Airports Use “Smart Screening”?

DAN HARRIS: Joining us now to debate whether we ought to be using profiling, former FBI agent Michael German who know works for the ACLU, the American Civil Liberties Union. He is against profiling and Steven Emerson. He is the Director of the Investigative Project on Terrorism. He is a former journalist who has been sounding alarms about Islamic radicalism for more than a decade now. He says profiling can be a useful tool. Welcome to both of you.

STEVEN EMERSON: Good morning.

HARRIS: Michael, let me start with you. Let me run something by you that was said by an Israeli counterterrorism expert to our chief justice correspondent, Peter Thomas. He said this. That all Muslims are not terrorists, but most terrorists are Muslims. Given that logic, doesn’t it make sense to do some profiling at airports?

GERMAN: Ah, no because of course that’s not true. Terrorists come in all shapes and sizes; all nationalities, all different political and religious causes.

HARRIS: But the vast majority of attacks in recent years have been perpetrated by radical Muslims, no?

GERMAN: Actually, no. If you look around the country there have been any number of White Supremacists and Neo-Nazis sort of activities. A dirty bomb was found in Bangor, Maine December of last year. A chemical weapon was found in Noonday, Texas in 2004. Neither one of those events were covered much because they were White Supremacists and Right Wing militias rather than Muslim extremists, but that doesn’t mean that that threat doesn’t exist.

HARRIS: Couldn’t we add them to the profile, though? Couldn’t we start profiling White Supremacists as well?

GERMAN: And now you’re profile includes everybody because of course there are Irish terrorists, there Puerto Rican national terrorists. There are South American drug courier terrorists. It’s simply an ineffective way. It’s unconstitutional, it’s ineffective and it’s actually counterproductive.

HARRIS: Steven. Let me jump in for a second. Steven, the argument against profiling is that it’s counterproductive as Michael just said; that it violates our values, which is exactly what the terrorists want us to do because it helps them recruit.

EMERSON: Look, I don’t buy it. The fact is, what I say is do smart screening. Ethnicity is one of the factors that should be included in the profile. After all, what is profiling? You’re extrapolating the common characteristics of the terrorist attacks. 100% of all the terrorist attacks against the United States last year were carried out by Muslim jihadists. So, if that’s the one common denominator, let’s include that in the mix. That at airports would trigger a secondary inspection in which case the bomber on Christmas Day this year, maybe have they found the bomb.

Imam Killed, 10 Others Arrested in Detroit Case

A Detroit imam was killed in a shootout with FBI agents Wednesday afternoon as the agents sought to arrest him and 10 other men on conspiracy and weapons charges.

Luqman Ameen Abdullah, formerly Christopher Thomas, is accused of being the ringleader of a radical Muslim separatist movement that wanted a state in America governed by Shariah law.

According to an affidavit in the criminal complaint, Abdullah, 53, and many of his followers were converts to Islam. Abdullah was convicted of assault and carrying a concealed weapon in 1981. Like other cases broken up this year, Abdullah converted to Islam after serving time in prison.

In the affidavit, FBI Special Agent Gary Leone described the defendants, saying: “Their primary mission is to establish a separate, sovereign Islamic state (“The Ummah”) within the borders of the United States, governed by Shariah law. The Ummah is to be ruled over by Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, formerly know as H. Rapp Brown.” Al-Amin is serving a life sentence after being convicted in 2002 of killing a Georgia police officer.

According to an FBI news release, the suspects were considered armed and dangerous and law enforcement used “special safeguards” to try to make the arrests peacefully. “Luqman Ameen Abdullah did not surrender and fired his weapon,” the release said. “An exchange of gun fire followed and Abdullah was killed.”

According to the complaint, a former member of Abdullah’s group cooperated in the investigation. The informant reported that Abdullah advocated “the spread of Islam through violent jihad.”

The affidavit makes it clear that when agents moved in, Abdullah practiced what he preached.

Abdullah at a fundraiser for Jamil Al-Amin in 2008

“He regularly preaches anti-government and anti-law enforcement rhetoric,” Leone wrote, and “preaches that every Muslim should have a weapon, and should not be scared to use their weapon when needed. Members and former members of the Masjid Al-Haqq have stated they are willing to do anything Abdullah instructs and/or preaches, even including criminal conduct and acts of violence.”

Abdullah saw himself and his followers “as soldiers at war against the United States government and against non-Muslims.

A second informant recorded Abdullah asking for $5,000 to “do something” during the 2006 Super Bowl in Detroit. If innocents were to be hurt, “it’s going to be legitimate,” Abdullah said. He complained that “Kafir” or non-believers, were watching him “ridiculously closely.” Still, he said he carried “some violence [in me] because of what they did to Imam Jamil [Al-Amin].

The Investigative Project on Terrorism will have more on this story Thursday. Read the full complaint here. See coverage in the Detroit Free Press here and the Detroit News here.

Foreign Car Makers Seen Passing Detroit in North America Capacity

June 24, 2009

Wall Street Journal 23 June 2009

The Big Three auto makers soon won’t be so big.

Even though they have been losing market share for decades, General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group LLC have continued to produce many more vehicles in North America than their foreign-owned rivals.

But production cuts as part of Detroit’s restructuring have put the Big Three on the verge of losing that distinction, according to a study by Grant Thornton LLP.

The auditing firm expects the Detroit car makers to cut capacity 36% from 2008 levels, to 7.5 million vehicles a year, as they work to more closely align capacity with smaller market share. It says European and Asian manufacturers will raise their capacity by a combined 23% to meet rebounding U.S. demand. That would leave them with the ability to make 8.1 million vehicles a year, surpassing the Big Three’s capacity by 2012.

The shift would mark a dramatic reversal of fortune. Until the 1980s, almost all vehicles made in North America were products of GM, Ford and Chrysler plants. Foreign rivals gained market share by importing vehicles made overseas.

But in the 1980s, first Honda Motor Co., then other Japanese car makers, started building plants in North America. Asian and European makers have built most of their North American plants in the South. If that trend continues, more suppliers will likely follow them there.

GM’s capacity use fell to 64% in 2008 from 88% in 2002, according to forecasting firm CSM Worldwide. Ford and Chrysler had similar drops. Honda’s North American capacity use was 94% in 2008. Toyota’s was 80%, CSM said.

Grant Thornton expects industrywide North American capacity use to hit 90% by 2012. That number has been closer to 75% historically. That would come in large part from a predicted 14% drop in overall capacity.

Local Dodge Dealer: Marvin M. Tamaroff

June 10, 2009

This letter was forwarded from the Mealey’s who own Birmingham (MI) Chrysler in Troy and are long-time friends of our family.  They are on the list of dealers to be closed next month and Mr. Mealey is in Washington D.C. today (5/29) to appear before the Task Force re: the closures.  Written by Mr. Tamaroff, this is a really amazing letter and I hope that you will pass it on to everyone.

May 22, 2009

As a loyal and successful Dodge Dealer for over 22 years it is not a big surprise that given the current economy, the marketplace may not support the number of Dealers presently representing Chrysler Corporation products.  However, the methodology Chrysler Corporation is attempting to utilize to reduce its Dealer body is unlawful, unconstitutional, un-American and grossly unfair. What Chrysler Corporation is attempting to do, under President Obama’s direction, is to use the United States Bankruptcy Court in New York to terminate 789 Dodge Chrysler Dealer Franchise Agreements, arbitrarily, capriciously, and without due process of law.   The so called
“criteria” establishing which Dealers will be terminated is seriously flawed and “non-transparent”.  Many of the Dodge/Chrysler Dealers are profitable, employ many quality employees, support their communities and provide the necessary competition to insure that customers receive competitively priced vehicles.  By reducing the number of automobile Dealers you are certain to reduce competition and the undesired effect
will be the increased prices that Americans will ultimately pay for the price of a car.

Additionally, Chrysler is proposing to take away my franchise without compensating me for its value.  I have invested millions of dollars to acquire the Dodge franchise, the Dealership facility and the real estate.

Chrysler proposes to transfer my franchise and all the goodwill I created over a 22 year span to a Chrysler competitor, across the street, free of charge, without compensating me one cent.

This is occurring despite my Tamaroff Dodge Dealership continuously achieving high sales, high customer satisfaction index ratings, a 5-star Dealer status (Chrysler’s highest achievement award), and over 22 years having built a loyal and satisfied customer base.  It is like “Crystal Night” in Nazi Germany in 1938, but instead of the Nazis seizing “private property” without due process of law and compensation, Chrysler and President Obama are using the power of a Federal Bankruptcy Judge to trample and run roughshod over the rights of 789 Dodge/Chrysler Dealers.  By using the power and governmental action of the Federal Bankruptcy Court, Chrysler and President Obama are purposely avoiding all state laws and some federal laws which were specifically designed by lawmakers to protect the Dealer from the overwhelming power of the manufacturer.  Furthermore, where is the due process for an unconstitutional taking of my franchise rights without just compensation?

My fellow Americans, I am a WWII veteran and former P.O.W. who risked my life for our country to defeat National Socialism and Hitler’s tyrannical Nazi regime.  Never in my entire 82 years (50 years as an auto dealer and mechanical engineer) would I have anticipated the President of the United States and an appointed Federal Bankruptcy Judge trampling on my rights, seizing my property and potentially causing me to go into bankruptcy and in the process acting as instruments of FACISM.

President Obama, is this the change you promised the American people? Where is the transparency you promised on the campaign trial?

To add insult to injury, Chrysler Corporation, at this date, will not buy back any of the Dealers’ new car inventory; inventory they pushed on the Dealers in the last 90 days threatening them that if they did not purchase the cars from Chrysler they would be remembered come “termination day.”

Finally, the worst point about this “Executive Branch sponsored taking” is the painful effect of laying off our people, many of whom have been with our company since the beginning.  They are like family. It is like throwing your kids out on the street, with no job, no money, and no health care.

It is a heartbreaking experience for the employees, their families and for me.

Recently, President Obama made a public statement that he is standing
by the Dealers . . .

Yes, he is standing on their graves.

Where is his leadership and foresight as he rushes to accomplish his agenda at the expense of 789 Dodge/Chrysler Dealers and their employees?

President Obama and the Obama administration are directly responsible for orchestrating this ill conceived plan.

My fellow Americans, WAKE UP before you lose your livelihood and private property without just compensation.

If the Executive Branch and Judicial Branch can successfully complete this illegal seizure of property and transfer of wealth from one Dealer to another, then is any American’s private property safe from unlawful government seizure?

As the great Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher once said,
The problem with socialism is sooner or later you run out of the other guy’s money.”

God Bless our Constitution, our Bill of Rights, and Our Great Country.

Area Muslims Eye Obama Speech

June 9, 2009

Leaders ready to bridge religious gaps

Detroit Free Press    4 June 09

During the Bush administration, Yahya Basha ( our comments- just like several other Muslim spokesmen- most of which are connected with supporting terrorism CAIR’s top organizers- and leaders in prison for doing just that.  See Holy Land Foundation court case)  of West Bloomfield was a frequent visitor to the White House, acting as a liaison between Muslim Americans and the U.S. government.

Over the years, the doctor said, he saw a shift in tone as “the Muslim community was pushed away.”

Basha, 63, is still a Republican, but the Arab-American Muslim said he hopes President Barack Obama succeeds today in reaching out to the Muslim world with what’s expected to be a major speech in Egypt on Islam. It’s a talk that will be closely watched by Michigan’s sizable Muslim population and one where Obama might mention the contributions of Muslim Americans.

“I think there’s a significant new approach,” Basha said. “People in the Middle East see the United States now has a president whose middle name is Hussein. He looks more like them. He has the name, the look, and the strongest country in the world behind him.”

Obama’s speech comes after a year of intense debate over his own relationship with the religion — which included false ( our comments- he is a muslim.  That’s what muslims claim) rumors he was Muslim — and over the U.S. government’s relationship to the Islamic world.

From detainees at Guantánamo Bay in Cuba to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the issue of Islam has become a major focus of government policies.

And so, Muslims in metro Detroit hope they can act as a bridge to help close the gap between the two.

“America needs its Muslim voices,” said Victor Begg of Bloomfield Hills, chairman of the Council on Islamic Organizations of Michigan. “Muslim Americans can be a huge asset in terms of changing attitudes within the Muslim world, and bringing the Islamic world closer to America.” (our comments- so why don’t they do it?)

Obama’s father was born into a Muslim family and Obama once lived in Indonesia, the most populous Muslim-majority country in the world.

But during the election campaign, Obama repeatedly stressed he was Christian. (our comments- but he doesn’t act like a Christian- ex. abortion) In recent months, though, Obama has shown an increasing willingness to talk about his Muslim past and about Muslim Americans.

In April, he told the Turkish Grand National Assembly in Ankara  that Islam “has done so much over the centuries to shape the world(our comments- and all for the worst- not the better) including in my own country. The United States has been enriched by Muslim Americans. Many other Americans have Muslims in their families or have lived in a Muslim-majority country — I know, because I am one of them.”

And Obama said this week he would bring up the issue of Muslim Americans today.
“One of the points I want to make is, is that if you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world,” he told a French television station. (our comments- Wrong data, Muslims are less than one percent of our population)

Those comments are encouraging, say local Muslims.

“I would hope that President Obama makes every effort to build bridges of understanding between American Muslims and the non-Muslim community,” said Suehaila Amen, 30, of Dearborn. “There is too much hate in the world.” (our comments- the hate is one sided.  Muslims tell us they intend to take America for Islam.  The hate speech is Islam against the free world.)

The relationship between Muslim Americans and the government cannot only help Muslims, but America’s standing in the world, said Muslim Americans and some government officials.

Imam Abdullah El-Amin of Detroit said that Obama can show that “the United States is not anti-Islam” and “will work with the Muslim world.”

Obama’s talk also will be watched by local members of the Jewish community, many of whom have strong ties to Israel. Some are concerned about Islamic extremism and hope that Obama will highlight the importance of fighting radical movements such as Hamas.

“Radical forces within the Islamic world need to be silenced” in order for peace to prevail, said Rabbi Jason Miller of Congregation t’Chiyah in Oak Park.

Todd Mendel, president of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Metro Detroit, said he hopes Obama talks about the threat of Iran and doesn’t pressure Israel to stop settlements on the West Bank — a sticking point in Palestinian-Israeli negotiations.

“I’m hoping he won’t focus on the smaller issues … like settlements,” Mendel said.

Some metro Muslims say that Obama should talk about putting pressure on Israel to help solve the Palestinian issue. (our comments- Notice!  Obama is willing to put pressure on Israel but we see his “pressure” on Hamas or Hezbullah.  We give them weapons, see Aaron Kleins book: “Schmoozing with Terrorists.”)

“The entire problem in the Muslim world is because of Palestine,” said Taher Rasheed, 69, of West Bloomfield.

Regardless of the differing views, both groups say the speech is important because it comes during a critical time for the United States and the Muslim world. (our comments- Yes. Iran and their constant threat against Israel- their goal to destroy Israel (and America by extension))

“I expect to see massive change,” Basha said.

Detroit-area Muslims laud talk; Jewish reaction wary

Detroit-area Muslims laud talk; Jewish reaction wary

Muslims in metro Detroit praised President Barack Obama’s landmark speech on Islam, in which he cited the contributions of Muslim Americans and intertwined the values of their faith with the ideals of the United States.

“I think Obama has closed the gap between the Muslim world and America,” said Ned Fawaz, 69, of Dearborn.

Speaking in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, Obama described the successes of Muslim Americans as an example of how the principles of Islam and those of the United States are compatible. At one point, he cited U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., a Detroit native who became the first Muslim congressman.

“Let there be no doubt: Islam is a part of America,” Obama said.

Suehaila Amen, 30, of Dearborn said that Obama is “giving the Muslim-American community the praise and respect that it has not been given in the past.”

Obama also stressed the importance of religious freedom, saying that Muslims have the full right to practice in the United States — but added that they should work on promoting tolerance of non-Muslims.

“Freedom in America is indivisible from the freedom to practice one’s religion,” Obama said. “That is why there is a mosque in every state in our union. … That’s why the United States government has gone to court to protect the right of women and girls to wear the hijab.”

Obama spoke of the U.S. commitment to Israel, but added that the country’s West Bank settlements must end. The remarks prompted criticism from some Jewish Americans in metro Detroit.

“The settlements are not the problem,” said Mark Segel, 56, of Southfield. The White House is “pressuring the wrong people” and should focus on Islamic extremists, he said. ?

Robert Cohen, executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Metro Detroit, said: “We share the vision and hope that the president set forth for Arab-Israeli reconciliation.”

My Comments:

Robert Cohen should clarify his statement – Because “We share the vision and hope….” doesn’t say what is important.

Israel is our only friend and we Americans are the only hope for Israel.

We MUST prevent Israel from being destroyed by do-gooders who know nothing about the terrorist elements (Hamas, Hezbollah) who plot Israel’s destruction.

Imad Hamad

March 31, 2009

Imad Hamad is a “former” terrorist. He is head of the local chapter of ADC, a radical proArab group. He continues to make statements in support of terrorist groups. Yet, amazingly and shockingly, the FBI and CIA romance him and embrace him. This is a scandal.

Can every “former” terrorist get a free dinner from the CIA?

CIA, Arab Americans seek to work together

Senior CIA leaders met Wednesday with about 30 Arab-American and Chaldean advocates to discuss ways to improve their relationship.

Held over dinner in a Southfield hotel, the meeting included Scott White, associate deputy director for the Central Intelligence Agency, and about half a dozen other CIA officials, some who attended the meeting said.

Scott talked about misperceptions of the CIA and said he was pleased to meet with local Arab Americans, said Imad Hamad, regional director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, who attended the dinner.

“It was a constructive meeting,” Hamad said. “We want to be partners and engage in a professional dialogue and relationship.”

Scott sought to dispel the stereotype that the CIA is just a spy agency, saying the agency offers a wide range of job opportunities.

“It removed some of the images people may have from seeing Hollywood movies …. the mystery of it,” said Osama Siblani, publisher of the Arab American News, who also attended the meeting. “They’re trying to reach out and change the perceptions of the CIA in the minds of Arab Americans.”

The meeting also included Chaldean leaders with the Chaldean Federation of America and the Chaldean-American Chamber of Commerce.

Both sides in Mideast fight hold rallies, exchange shouts downtown

Separated by police, the two groups of protesters — one pro-Arab, the other pro-Israel — shouted at each other Thursday afternoon outside a federal building in downtown Detroit.

It was a scene that reflected deep divisions among some parts of metro Detroit’s Arab-American and Jewish communities, a split that has spilled over into growing public displays — and in some cases inflammatory rhetoric.

But despite their differences, both have a common anxiety about the violence that has affected many personally.

“I haven’t been able to get a good night’s sleep for a week now,” said Keith Sirlin, 56, of Bloomfield Township, whose Michigan-raised daughter serves in the Israeli army. “She’s in the middle of a war right now. … I keep getting to up to watch reports on TV.”

Sirlin said his daughter Carley, 22, helps protect a school in a southern Israeli town, Sderot, that has come under frequent rocket fire from Hamas. Part of her mission is to try to allay schoolchildren’s fears.

“She’s just an innocent person trying to do her duty and help out her country,” Sirlin said.

A family in peril

Mahmoud Habeel, 41, of Ypsilanti Township has similar worries about his family in Gaza. He said he found out Wednesday night that homes of family members were heavily damaged after an Israeli strike against a nearby mosque. Habeel said that two of his cousins, Mohamad Habeel, 21, and Talal Habeel, 23, were killed when Israel struck a police station in Gaza City, where they were training to be police officers.

“They were not involved in any fighting at all,” said Habeel. “They were just regular people trying to get a job.”

He said a third relative, Raed Habeel, 17, was killed this week after coming under fire near the town of Beit Lahya. And then came the news of a strike that he said heavily damaged a complex of residences near the town of Sheikh Radwan, where his four brothers and two sisters live.

Habeel said that he spoke with family members in Gaza on Wednesday night

“Everyone is scared, running for their lives,” Habeel said. “There’s no safe place. … It’s barbaric, the way I see it.”

But some members of the Jewish community say the source of the problem is terrorism from Hamas. On Thursday, an Israeli diplomat visiting metro Detroit defended his country’s actions.

“Israel is doing everything it can to avoid injury and death to noncombatants but we have to ask, why are there Hamas military installations inside houses, inside schools, even inside mosques?” said Gershon Kedar, deputy consul general of Israel.

‘We have no choice’

David Rott, 30, of West Bloomfield agrees. A former member of the Israel Defense Forces, Rott organized Thursday’s pro-Israel rally, which drew up to 50 people. Rott used to live in Tel Aviv and said he has witnessed the aftermath of suicide bomb attacks. He said that helps him understand Israel’s determination to defend itself against terrorism.

“If the Canadians started shooting rockets across the border into downtown Detroit, I wonder what our response would be,” Rott said. “Israel is justified in protecting its citizens. We have no choice. We cannot leave 700,000 citizens of the State of Israel open to indiscriminate rocket attack. … It’s very difficult if not impossible to deal with groups dedicated to your destruction.”

Later Thursday, a crowd of about 2,000 people packed into Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield to voice their support for Israel.

“Israel cannot back down until her survival is assured beyond any shadow of a doubt.” Rabbi Joseph Krakoff was to say in his in prepared remarks. “The people of Israel do not desire violence or war. They want peace.”

To local Palestinians, though, the rising death toll in Gaza is disturbing.

“I’m very sad for those who are killed,” said Sufian Nabhan, 38, of Dearborn. “And I’m very mad about what’s going on.”

In local Palestinian communities, some are raising money to help Gaza victims. And special prayers have been held inside a number of mosques. The war happened during the 10 days of Ashura, an emotional mourning period for Shi’ite Muslims who recall the death of a man, Imam Hussain, they say was killed in battle by an unjust ruler.

“For me as a Palestinian, when I watch the TV, it’s like my kids being killed,” Nabhan said.

One issue that has caused tension locally has been the rhetoric of some protesters during the recent rallies.

At one Dearborn rally, a woman held up a sign that equated the Jewish Star of David to the Nazi swastika; others repeatedly compared the Gaza strikes to the Holocaust; and more than once, protesters protestors chanted in Arabic a slogan referring to a battle that resulted in the oppression of Jews in Arabia centuries ago.

“There is not a Holocaust going on in Gaza, Israelis and Jews are not Nazis, and calling for a religious war against Jews is incitement to hate and violence,” said Don Cohen, who has monitored extremism for years and is director of the Great Lakes Region chapter of B’nai B’rith International. “If they don’t know this, something is wrong.”
