Muhummad’s slave and adopted son, Laid, and his cousin, Ali, the son of Abu Talib and, his close friend Abu Bakr- father of Ayesha.

Shi’ite Muslims from across the United States are coming to Dearborn for a conference this weekend that is centered on the life of Imam Ali, the son-in-law of Islam’s prophet.

Muhammad’s friend and follower offered his 6 year old daughter to Muhammad to play with- he then married this child.- When she was 9 years old she became his bride!

Organized by the Muslim Congress, the three-day event that starts today Friday is expected to draw up to 1,500 Muslims, said conference organizers. The event comes at a time when the U.S. government is showing a growing interest in how to reach out to the Muslim world after President Barack Obama’s major speech on Islam (in Egypt) last month. The name of this year’s conference is “Imam Ali, the Perfection of Humanity.”

“It’s a great opportunity for Muslims and non-Muslims to learn,” said Bilal Dabaja, 24, of Dearborn, a conference volunteer.

The conference is to feature scholars and religious leaders who are often relied upon by Shi’ites to help guide them in their lives. The sessions include lectures on marriage, stress, the Quran and Imam Ali.

“We try to emulate Imam Ali,” said Hyder Syed, of Houston, Texas, secretary of the Muslim Congress. “He was very courageous.”

Tarek Baydoun, 24, of Dearborn said the conference is a “good way for the community to come together and remember our faith.”
