Thoughtful Story

February 12, 2009

One evening, as a man made his way home along a dimly-lit street, the night air was suddenly pierced by muffled screams just beyond a hedgerow.  Startled, he strained to listen, only to be overcome with fear for just a few yards from where he stood, a woman was being brutalized.

What am I going to do?  If I get involved, it may cost me dearly.  Surely , it would be wiser to run to the nearest phone and call the authorities.  This situation is best left up to others to handle.  Those deliberations, which took only few seconds, were bankrupt, and he knew it.

Without wasting any more precious time, he sprang into action, strangely transformed.  He yanked the assailant off his victim and threw him to the ground.  There they wrestled for a few minutes until the attacker broke free and ran off.

The young women was now cowering behind a tree sobbing in the darkness.  Tender-heartedly, he called out to her from a distance so as not to frighten her further. “It’s okay,” he said softly as he struggled to gain his composure.  “The man ran away.  You’re safe now.”

The words he heard next, he will surely take to his grave.  “Dad, is that you?” And then, out of the shadows, appeared his very own daughter.
